Fiona

2005 - 2017

MARTIN, Fiona: In her 13th year, after a courageous battle. On the morning of Friday May 19, 2017 our sweet girl earned her wings and is now at The Rainbow Bridge.
She spent the first 8+ years of her life in a puppy mill, forced to give birth year after year to countless litters of puppies. She was rescued from this horrific life by Speaking Of Dogs rescue organization. That is when Janet saw her story and knew that she was meant to join our family. On September 7, 2013 she joined our family and we named her Fiona. Lucy helped show Fiona what it was like to be a much loved pet. Fiona became half of the duo affectionately dubbed "The Girls". It took some time but Fiona began to trust us. Her tail soon came out from what seemed like the permanent spot between her legs, and it began to wag. She learned that human hands could be gentle, delicious food was available on a regular basis, beds were warm and soft, treats were plentiful and belly rubs were heavenly. It was beautiful to watch Fiona learn what grass was and to learn to roll in just it like her sister Lucy did. We watched her experience snow for the very first time, and she soon learned to run to the front door with Lucy to give her silent bark to the paper boy and the mail man (her bark was taken from her in the puppy mill, where they shattered her vocal cords with a metal rod). Fiona quickly acquired an extensive wardrobe of dresses, sweaters, coats and bandannas, which she proudly wore on her outings and walks around the neighbourhood. Fiona experienced many adventures with us. Long walks along the Lake Ontario shoreline where there were so many new things to sniff; going to different festivals in Durham Region (Peony festival, Applefest, Metis festival, Autofest etc) and she even had her picture taken with Santa Claus. Fiona also volunteered at Hillsdale Terraces nursing home, where she shared her love and gentle demeanor with many of the residents. Fiona was spoiled during her many sleepovers at Grandma Bev and Grandpa Clarence's house. Fiona also loved to go up the street to visit with Mrs F., and she quickly learned where the treat cupboard was. Fiona was very protective of her sister Lucy, and although she never learned how to play with toys (squeaky toys scared her), she did love to play the "Parade" game at home with Janet.
Fiona spent 1,350 days with us, free from the cages in the puppy mill. She has left us far too soon.
"Saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever."
Fiona's palliative treatment and end of life care were entrusted to the always kind and very compassionate staff at Baker Animal Clinic.
Run free sweet Fiona.
