A Tribute to Lola DeMarco

With sadness, David and I announce that our beloved pet, “LOLA” was put to sleep forever on February 10, 2008. Lola was being treated recently for chronic renal failure (advanced kidney disease), but in the last few weeks her condition worsened to the point where she could no longer walk, and her quality of life was greatly reduced.
This hastened our decision to euthanize her, to shorten her ordeal. Lola first arrived on our doorstep eighteen years ago, after a neighbour was asking around if anyone was interested in adopting a stray kitten who had recently been rescued from an attempted drowning.
We already had a beautiful cat and Lola was infested with ear mites, but I took her to the vet and had her treated, and she immediately stole our hearts away with her affection and playful antics.
She gave us many moments of joy over the years like the time my father was raking the leaves under the grape arbour and Lola was hiding in ambush at the top of the grape arbour. She was quite fascinated by the wool toque my father was wearing, and while Father was sweeping the leaves Lola took notice of the fluffy ball on top of my fathers toque, and gave it a good hook. My startled father, unaware of Lola's presence, felt his toque lift and settle back but dismissed it to the wind, and so he resumed his raking, until Lola hooked his toque again. Eventually, Lola lifted the entire toque off his head, and that's when he finally noticed who it was up there hiding in ambush.
I had developed a two tone whistle used only for Lola, so she knew when I wanted her to come promptly. When she was younger she would come with a fast trot, and as she got older, she would come with slower pace, but she always came, and always expected her little reward, either a treat, or a brushing, or her favourite meal.
At 18, she was oldest cat I ever had, and was with me for many important occasions in my life. David and I will remember the happier times we had with her, and perhaps at some time in the future, we may be ready to adopt another pet. Lola will be cremated this week, and her ashes will be returned to us in the near future. We are thankful for the time we had with her, and the joy she brought into our life.
